Review + Excerpt: Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.
So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.
When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

Overall Thoughts:
I loved this book! It scared the crap out of me so it did it's job!

Anna Dressed in Blood is about a 17 year old guy named Theseus Cassio Lowood (People just call him Cas, for obvious reasons). He is a ghost killer, and good at what he does with his trusty athame at his side. He gets a letter in the mail with the name Anna written in actual blood, which is the only clue he gets in his quest to find and kill the ghost people call, Anna Dressed in Blood. He lives and travels with his mother and her cat. When they receive the letter, they move to Thunder Bay, Ontario, which is where Anna Korlov is stationed and Cas starts attending Sir Winston Churchill, a high school located there. He starts associating with people just to find out more information about Anna and her whereabouts, and actually finds out where she lives... exists.

The first time Cas goes to her house, a group of popular kids are there with him and they decide to play a mean trick on him to get him to go into her house. And by mean trick, I mean they knock him unconscious and drag him into the house, then run out. Legend has it, that anyone who steps foot in her house, will be brutally murdered. Cas sees Anna for the first time, and Anna sees him but for some reason... she doesn't attack him. But someone does die in that interaction... just saying. Cas returns to the haunted house repeated times, always with the same intention: To kill Anna. But after awhile, they both start to let down their guards and feelings start to turn into something more as time progresses.

This book is written in Cassio's point of view, which I liked a lot. But I was pretty curious as to how the book would've turn out if it was written in Anna's point of view. Cas was described as muscular yet lanky with a brooding countenance. He's not use to social activities and situations, what with his life revolving around death and all, but he knows how to handle himself. Anna is described as a pretty-looking 16 year old girl with pale skin and long dark hair. Cas thinks she's beautiful. She is, but when someone other than Cas steps foot in her house, she turns in a demon literally. She's no longer the sweet young woman she was with Cas. The more they talk and the closer they become, the harder it is for him to do his job.

Things I disliked about this book:
There wasn't really anything that I didn't like about this book, other than the fact that it was so short. There were only 316 pages, and I read through it much too soon for my liking. The book also ends on a HUGE cliffhanger, which makes me so mad because I want the next book right now!

Things I liked about this book:
Um... everything? I loved the characters, especially Cas. I loved the fact that even though he was a rough and tough, hardcore ghost hunter, he still had soft spots. For example, usually when he encounters ghosts, he's quickly in and out. Finds them, kills them, and moves on. He never gets attached to anyone in the area because he knows that it's just a matter of time before he has to keep on moving. But he ends up finding a group of extremely loyal friends that mean a lot to him.

Verdict:
This book was amazing! Easily 5 targets! It had nice pacing, there were never any dull moments. But I must tell you to heed my warning when I say this book is not for the faint hearted lol. Also, make sure to read it with the lights on! Hopefully, that will keep your imagination from wandering...

Girl of Nightmares is the next book in this series, and it comes out in August 2012! It's already on my to-be-read list!

5/5 TARGETS!

Excerpt:
"Anna is going to kill me, and I'm surprised to find that I would rather it be one like her, in her dress made of blood. I would rather succumb to whatever hell she has in mind for me than give up quietly in a hospital somewhere because someone hit me in the head with a piece of plank board. She's coming closer. My eyes are drifting shut, but I can hear her movements whisper through the air. I can hear each fat drop of blood strike the floor. I open my eyes. She's standing above me, the goddess of death, black lips and cold hands. "Anna." My mouth curls into a weak smile."

Hope you liked the review! P.S. As you can see, I'm experimenting with blockquotes. I'm a new blogger, and just now learning how to use html codes and whatnot. If you know anything about blockquotes or ways to improve it, let me know!

Review: Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Let me start off by saying that this book took me forever to finish! Like... 2 1/2 weeks to finish. That's forever.

It's about this boy named Ethan Wate. He lives in Gatlin, which is a really small town in South Carolina. Everything has been the same since before he was even born. So of course, he's bored. He plans to leave once he graduates high school to travel to more exciting places. Then enters Lena Duchannes! She is a misfit. She doesn't wear the "right" clothes, or say the "conventional" things, or do what everyone expects. But for some reason, Ethan wants her... bad. They meet; fall in love (though Lena was wary); and you'd think everything was perfect. Well, you're wrong. Turns out, Lena is a Caster girl. In other words, she's a witch. An unclaimed witch. When she turns 16 years old, she will either turn into a Dark Caster (bad) or a Light Caster (good).

This book is written in Ethan's point of view, which I liked because there's not enough books with male pov's in my opinion. And I was really fond of Ethan! He seemed like the kind of guy any girl would be proud to bring home to their family. He was laid-back yet passionate in his love for Lena; smart but not annoyingly so. He didn't care about what others thought of him, AND he was described as a cutie! He wins Lena's heart by all those winning characteristics.

The things that I didn't like about this book was that it ran a little too long for me. The authors would describe something with explicit detail! Don't get me wrong, I love when an author is able to paint a picture for me of the setting or the characters or whatever. But after a certain amount of words, I get bored.

I was also often annoyed by Lena's pessimistic attitude. She was such a Debby Downer all the time! Granted, she had good reasons. I mean, her fate was going to be decided for her on whether or not she was going to turn evil or stay good on her 16th birthday, but geez! Ethan was ALWAYS comforting her and telling her that everything was going to be okay. Believe him, Lena. He's cute!

I loved the ending though, I'm not going to lie. It was very action-packed and there's a TWIST! Because of the epic ending, I've rated this book 3 targets and not 2 targets like I planned.

3/5 TARGETS!

Dirty Little Secret #3

Dirty Little Secret is a weekly meme hosted by Under the Covers. Every Thursday we get to know other bloggers and our readers more intimately by asking them a question hoping to reveal their dirty little secrets.  We hope that you will all join us!

"You are a kick ass chick, ready to face the night
and kill some nasty vampires.
You have your leathers on, your sidekick is ready...
What is your weapon of choice?"

I love this question! The weapon of my choice would have to be double blades. Don't ask me why because I have no idea. I just think that's the most hardcore thing in the world, being skilled in sword fighting... or is it called fencing? For some reason, that doesn't sound as hardcore so I'm just going to call it sword fighting. Just imagine it! You're dressed in black leather from head to toe; your body's curves accentuated by the fabric's tightness. Your long jet black hair is swaying in the wind. Your eyes narrow slightly as you try to focus them. You see your target: The filthy vampire. Your feet surge forward, causing you to break out into a full-on sprint. You pull out your twin swords, and smile slightly when you hear the SLICING! sound made from their deadly sharpness. The undead creature doesn't even see you coming. Too late now.
Game over

Freaking awesome, right?

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia + Margaret Stohl

I walked Lena to the seat in the front of the room obviously reserved for her. It was right in front of the firing squad, dead center.
It's going to be okay.
Promise?
I could hear the rain pounding on the roof outside.
I promise this doesn't matter. I promise these people are idiots. I promise nothing they say will ever change the way I feel about you.
I'll take that as a no.

Dirty Little Secret is a weekly meme hosted by Under the Covers. Every Thursday we get to know other bloggers and our readers more intimately by asking them a question hoping to reveal their dirty little secrets.  We hope that you will all join us!
"Which paranormal creature do you wish would "come out of the closet" and reveal themselves to the real world?"

Hmm... probably not a vampire because that would just be plain scary. I don't care if Edward Cullen were to walk out of my closet-Dude wants to drink my blood; that's not really cool with me lol. I'll have to go with wizards, if they count as paranormal creatures. And yes, I'm talking about Harry Potter kind of wizards. I'm sick of being a muggle! I want to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! I want to fly on a Firebolt! I want to have an owl that will somehow know where to send my pointless mail! I want to face Lord Voldemort and live to tell the tale... Wait, never mind that last one. I'll leave that up to Harry lol.  My point is: Life can get a bit boring at times. Why in the world do you think I read fantasy books?! Not for my health lol

Review: Tears of Betrayal by Sherry A. Burton

AMBER'S WORLD IS SHATTERED when her husband Jeff dies suddenly in an accident. On the day of his funeral, in the midst of her grief, she is blind-sided with divorce papers, served only hours before the service. Forced to face how flawed her marriage truly was, Amber finally begins to deal with the lies and deceit that were at the very foundation of her relationship. When the ruggedly handsome Kentucky horse breeder Dalton loses his beloved wife shortly after the birth of their child, he thinks he will never find love again. Four years later, he knows something is missing from his life, but just can't seem to place it. Until he meets the raven-haired beauty; the woman of his dreams. Will Amber overcome the fear of being hurt again and find true love? Will she be able to see clearly through her tears of betrayal?

OMG! This book surprised me! Going into it, I didn't really expect it to be as good as it actually was.

The book is about a woman named Amber Mae. She has one 13 year old daughter: Julie, and one douche of a husband: Jeff. They've been together for over a decade, and it turns out that Jeff had been unfaithful to Amber the whole entire time! What a douche, right!? Jeff is always away, never calling to tell her why, and he actually plans on divorcing her and leaving her for another girl (one of whom is knocked up by him). But he dies in a car crash, can't say I was sad to see him go. The day of the funeral, Amber is served with divorce papers and the vicious girlfriend/baby momma on the side confronts her in front of everyone there, leaving Amber angry, confused, embarrassed, and just plain sad!

But for me, the story doesn't really start until the love interest and her meet; Dalton is his name. He has one daughter: Katie Mae, and a nanny: Maggie. He's a widow as well, but he just couldn't seem to find the right woman until he sets his eyes on the raven-haired beauty, none other than Amber.

You can guess what happens next, folks...

This book had a southern feel to it, which kind of deterred me from reading it in the beginning, but I'm so happy that I continued reading it! I loved the whole entire book overall. I will say that the first half of the book wasn't nearly as exciting or enticing as the second half, which is why it's 4 stars and not 5 stars, but the second half definitely made up for it.

I will definitely be buying Burton's next book, The Scars Between Us, which will be coming out in Feb 2012!

Review: Destined by P.C. Cast + Kristen Cast

Zoey is finally home where she belongs, safe with her Guardian Warrior, Stark, by her side, and preparing to face off against Neferet -- which would be a whole lot easier if the High Council saw the ex-High Priestess for what she really is. Kalona has released his hold on Rephaim, and, through Nyx's gift of a human form, Rephaim and Stevie Rae are finally able to be together -- if he can truly walk the path of the Goddess and stay free of his father's shadow.

But there are new forces at work at the House of Night. An influx of humans, including Lenobia's handsome horse whisperer, threatens their precarious stability. And then there's the mysterious Aurox, a jaw-droppingly gorgeous teen boy who is actually more -- or possibly less -- than human. Only Neferet knows he was created to be her greatest weapon. But Zoey can sense the part of his soul that remains human, the compassion that wars with his Dark calling. And there's something strangely familiar about him . . .

Awakened left on such a huge cliff hanger, and Destined definitely picked it back up. This book focuses more on Zoey's friends, instead of her, which I liked because she is constantly the center of attention in the HoN books, but it was different this time around. We got to see more into the Twin's (Shaunee and Erin) relationship. They actually have a big part in the book, and I enjoyed reading more about them. This installment also focuses on Kalona and Rephaim's relationship. Though Kalona seems like the cold hearted immortal, he actually has a soft spot for his son and it shows drastically in this book. I was actually really proud of Kalona, he changes a lot in this book.

As per usual, Neferet is up to no good. Turns out Darkness (the white bull) is Neferet's consort, and together they stir up more chaos than you can imagine. Neferet's true intentions really shine in this book: She wants to become Goddess, and destroy Nyx. Plain and simple, simple and plain.

I was particularly interested in Aurox because Heath was my favorite character before he was... eliminated. You actually get to see some old Heath tendencies in this book (i.e. tissues in his pocket for Zo's snot issues lol) and they made me smile. Aurox deals with a lot of internal issues in this book. He doesn't completely understand what he is or where he came from and that bothers him, as it would anyone.

New characters were introduced in this book: Travis Foster and Bonnie. He is hired by Neferet (much to Lenobia's dismay) to help Lenobia with the horses. Bonnie is his horse. The two start off kind of rocky, but eventually bond over "horses and happiness" (you'll get it when you read the book) and end up getting a bit close. And we finally get to see Lenobia's weakness and insecurities.

Overall, I gave this book 4 stars out of 5 because I did enjoy reading it, and I loved the addition of the new characters. I also really liked how we got to understand other characters a lot better, and it wasn't centered on Zoey as much. It didn't live up to my expectations, but I still am a huge fan of this series!

*Summary from Goodreads*

Teaser:
I was striking the match to light the purple candle when Stevie Rae's shout disrupted everything.
          "Rephaim! Look out!"
I glanced up in time to see Dragon Lankford burst out of the shadows. Sword upraised, he was sprinting toward Rephaim.
"Trust me!" Dragon yelled. "Get down!"
          "No!" Stevie Rae screamed.
Rephaim didn't hesitate. Not even for a second...

House of Night book series to be made into movie?

P.C. Cast has stated on her blog that Davis Films, has acquired film rights to her and Kristen's House of Night young adult fiction book series. Forums will be set up so that fans will be able to give their say about what they want to see in the HoN movies. They are currently working on the screenplay and director at the moment. It is stated that P.C. Cast will have creative input.

Can I be in the movie? Just asking...

By the way, has anyone read Destined yet? I'm picking it up tomorrow, and I can't wait to read it!
The cover is not too shabby either :D
